Afrocentric studio rooted in public history

A man without culture is like
a zebra without stripes

PROVERB
INTRODUCTION

Mabuza Studio documents Africans and their diaspora communities.

We create portraits, photo essays, moving stills, audio projects, public programming that centre intersectional narratives, challenging how Blackness is represented whilst celebrating the profound diversity within Black communities.

We champion a world where many worlds fit by amplifying past and present truths, blending journalism and history to add to our collective understanding of Black experiences.

ABOUT

Mabuza is created by Nompumelelo Ncube (Nom) and is named after her family totem meaning

'The Ones Who Ask.'

'The intersectionalities within my identity have taught me the importance in continuing to diversify the lenses through which we see Black identities and communities. My mission is to build bridges across the diaspora for us to exchange ideas on heritage, culture and Blackness.

I want to tell stories in an Afrocentric way that does not shy away from the complexities of history and the nuances of my position as a Zimbabwean born British raised artist and academic. You can view our methodology here.'
